A Winter Edinburgh Proposal at The Vennel
Allan & Kayla’s Story (aka how I pretended to be a tourist and helped plan the sweetest surprise)
If you’re dreaming of a surprise proposal in Edinburgh and want it captured without a hitch (or them noticing you’ve been whispering with a photographer behind the scenes), this story is maybe for you.
Proposals are one of my absolute favourite things to photograph. They’re intimate, emotional, and full of energy – and when the planning is spot on, the results are unreal. Whether you’re a local or flying in from abroad, having someone who knows Edinburgh well and can guide you through the best proposal spots, timing, and lighting can make all the difference.
This one? An absolute dream.
Allan messaged me from Texas about a month before he and Kayla were due to fly over for a vacation in Edinburgh. He wanted to propose while they were exploring - something romantic, low-key but still scenic - and he wanted it captured without Kayla catching on. I was all in.
We spent weeks chatting over email, sharing potential locations and maps, talking through how it might play out. Allan wanted somewhere classic Edinburgh - beautiful, iconic, but without the chaos of the Royal Mile - so we chose The Vennel, a tucked away lane with cobbles, character, and that postcard-worthy view of Edinburgh Castle.
Planning the perfect surprise proposal in Edinburgh
On the day, I was already in place at The Vennel pretending to be a tourist. Camera out, scarf up, lurking as casually as I could (I’ve done this more than a few times now, so I’ve got the art of stealth down). Allan and I were in touch the whole time via WhatsApp, checking locations and making sure the moment would unfold perfectly.
And then it happened!
He dropped to one knee.
Kayla looked stunned.
A few tourists nearby started filming on their phones (cute).
And I kicked into action, capturing every second.
Her reaction was everything – total shock, followed by so much joy. Afterward, I introduced myself properly, and we wandered through the city together for a mini engagement session. I got to hear all about their trip, and capture that just-engaged buzz while it was still fresh.
These two were the sweetest - shy, kind, and completely wrapped up in the moment. And honestly, being part of it all, from the planning to the final photo, was such a joy.
Why book a proposal photographer in Edinburgh?
When you’re planning to propose, especially in a city you don’t know well, having a photographer who can help you with the where, when, and how is a game changer. I don’t just turn up with a camera - I help you scout the perfect spot, create a plan that actually works, and capture the moment in a way that feels totally authentic.
If you’re thinking about proposing in Scotland, whether it’s on a city break in Edinburgh, up a mountain in Glencoe, or on a beach at sunset, I’d love to be part of it.
Planning your own Edinburgh proposal?
Let’s make it personal, meaningful, and beautifully documented. Whether you’ve got a ring burning a hole in your pocket or you’re just starting to plan, I can help with location ideas, timing, and stealthy photographer strategies.
Drop me a message to chat about your surprise proposal plans in Edinburgh (or anywhere in Scotland!) – I’d love to hear what you’ve got in mind - and don’t worry, I’m great at keeping secrets!
