The Ultimate Guide to Confetti: How to Make It EPIC at Your Wedding!

The Confetti Lowdown

Picture this: You’ve just tied the knot, emotions are running high, and you step out hand in hand as your guests erupt into cheers—and a shower of glorious, fluttering confetti! It’s one of the most joyful, high-energy, frame-worthy momentsof the entire day, and trust me, you want to make the most of it.

As a wedding photographer who lives for a good confetti shot, I’m here to give you the inside scoop on how to turn your confetti moment from cute to absolutely legendary. Ready? Let’s go!

Why Confetti Matters More Than You Think

The confetti toss is more than just a tradition—it’s a photography goldmine. Think movement, genuine laughter, joyful chaos, and an explosion of colour—all of which make for those high-energy, story-telling images you’ll treasure forever. It’s the kind of moment that instantly transports you back to how your wedding felt.

And yet… all too often, couples go for a tiny handful of confetti, and suddenly what could’ve been a shower of magicbecomes more of a light drizzle. We’re aiming for maximum impact here, folks! So let’s talk strategy.

How to Get That EPIC Confetti Moment

1. More is MORE!

When it comes to confetti, there is no such thing as too much. You need at least one litre per 10 guests to get a decent effect, but if you want that cinematic, full-on shower (which, let’s be honest, you do), then think double that amount.

💡 TOP TIP: Always, always buy extra. The last thing you want is to run out or have a half-hearted sprinkle when you could’ve had a full-blown confetti storm.

2. Choose the Right Confetti

Not all confetti is created equal. If you want that slow-falling, dreamy effect that gives your photographer time to capture the magic, here’s what to go for:

✅ Large biodegradable petals – Delicate, weightless, and perfect for fluttering.
✅ Tissue-paper confetti – Super light, it floats forever and comes in any colour.
✅ Mix it up! – A combo of petals and tissue paper gives gorgeous texture in photos.

🚫 Avoid heavy rice, plastic or metallic confetti—it falls too fast, and some venues won’t allow it. Stick with biodegradable, so it’s venue-friendly and eco-conscious.

3. Get Guests Involved (and HYPED!)

Your guests need to go for it, and trust me, they sometimes need a little encouragement. Here’s how to make sure they throw with enthusiasm:

🔥 Announce it! Ask your celebrant, best mate, or me (your photographer) to rally the crowd before you walk through. “Grab a huge handful and THROW IT HIGH!” is the vibe we’re going for.

🔥 Positioning is key. Guests should be lined up closely on either side of a walkway, not scattered. A tighter tunnel = more concentrated confetti magic.

4. The Grand Exit: Walk, Don’t Sprint!

This is your moment! Take it slow and steadypause for a kiss, twirl, cheer—soak it all in! The more you engage with the moment, the more incredible your photos will be.

And if you really want next-level magic, consider a double confetti moment: once after the ceremony and again later in the evening with confetti cannons for a dance floor explosion! 🌟

What did they have and how did they use it?

Quite often couples ask me what confetti options were used to create some of the images on my website, so here are a few I get asked about a lot! Couples that used confetti in different ways, but all with great results.

Aisle Walk w/ Cannon - D+N opted for indoor confetti as they walked down the aisle at Summerhall in Edinburgh. Guests all had a generous bag that they chucked as the couple walked through and then Daisy set off her own cannon at the end! This confetti was from Your Confetti and was a beautiful mix of peach, lilac, pink and cream - it worked beautifully!

Outdoor Tunnel w/Cannons! - R+J’s venue didn’t allow confetti, so instead we took a handful of their closest friends and family after their ceremony and plodded down Leith Walk to find a suitable side street! We lined everyone up and off they went. In the middle there were also 2 cannons let off for some extra oomph! This was a rainbow mix and it was delicious!

Natural Petals - T+R opted for natural dried petals from their own garden. R was a keen gardener himself and had collected and dried the petals himself in preparation for the big day. Their venue didn’t allow paper, so this was a great option and smelled amazing! It toned in beautifully with the gorgeous pink exterior of The Harbour Chapel!

Confetti x2 - R+F took the more is more memo and RAN with it! They had a small but mighty wedding with just a handful of close pals and family. But, they bought double the confetti they needed. First we did a traditional tunnel out onto the royal mile, then, with the leftovers we did a bomb where we arranged their guests in a semi circle around them and they all threw their handfuls at the same time while R+F had a wee smooch in the middle - it looked absolutely EPIC and these were some of my favourite shots from the whole day. So blooming cool. R+F opted for a pink and white mix that looked beautiful against Robyn’s pink dress. This mix was perfect for winter and would also have looked great mixed with a burgundy or a darker pink too.
