Your Guide to the Best Pre-Wedding Shoot Locations Near Edinburgh

So, you've booked your wedding with me—amazing! Now, let’s talk about your pre-wedding shoot that you’ve added on. These warm-up sessions are a fantastic way to capture some relaxed, authentic moments as a couple before the big day, and they’re also a great chance to get comfortable in front of the camera and find out that it’s not as scary as you thought. But the big question is: where should we do it?

Picking the right location can make all the difference, and luckily, Edinburgh and its surroundings are packed with stunning spots that suit all kinds of vibes. Whether you're after dramatic landscapes, romantic backdrops, or something a little more urban, I've got you covered.

Here's a rundown of some of my favourite pre-wedding shoot locations to inspire you.

1. Edinburgh City Centre

The heart of Edinburgh offers a mix of iconic landmarks and hidden gems. We could take a stroll through the cobbled streets, capturing candid moments in historic settings. Holyrood Park is perfect if you’re looking for a bit of greenery, and St. Anthony’s Chapel ruins provide a dramatic, ancient backdrop with stunning views of the city. Or how about heading up Calton Hill for those postcard-perfect Edinburgh skyline shots which are especially juicy at sunset or early morning? Or we can grab an ice-cream, take a stomp through the Meadows and end at the Vennel for that classic Edinburgh Castle shot!

2. Yellowcraig Beach

Located just outside the city, Yellowcraig Beach is a dreamy spot, especially at golden hour. The soft light, open space, and variety of backdrops (think dunes, grassy paths, and the sea) make it a versatile choice. It’s usually quiet, so you can relax and focus on enjoying the moment together.

3. Pentland Hills

For adventurous couples, the Pentland Hills offer endless possibilities. Lots of peaceful trails, there’s so much to explore. There’s even a hidden waterfall that makes for a magical photo spot. If you’re nature lovers or just want something a bit more rugged and wild, this could be the perfect fit. It’s also a great otpion for couples wanting to bring along their dog!

4. Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh

The Botanic Gardens are a wee oasis in the city, with vibrant greenery and seasonal blooms all year round. Whether it’s spring blossoms or autumnal tones, this location provides a colourful and romantic setting for your shoot. Plus, there’s plenty of variety within the gardens to keep things interesting.

5. Loch Lomond Nature Reserve

If you’re up for a little drive, Loch Lomond is a breathtaking spot. It’s got sweeping views (on a good day!), tranquil waters, and lush landscapes, it’s perfect for couples who want something picturesque. This location feels like a mini getaway and gives you some showstopper shots.

6. The Shore, Leith

For a different Edinburgh vibe, The Shore in Leith offers a mix of urban edge and waterfront charm. The cobbled streets, colourful buildings and street art make it a standout choice for couples looking for something a little quirkier and more contemporary. Grab a coffee and cake at Mimi’s and we can go explore.

7. Lauriston Castle

Lauriston Castle is a firm favourite of mine, especially in spring when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom, or in autumn with the vibrant colours. The gardens are beautifully maintained and there are son many amazing spots from the rose garden to the Japanese gardens to the steps of the castle. It’s a hidden gem and I’m always so surprised by how many people don’t know about it!

8. Cramond Beach

Cramond Beach offers wide-open spaces, sandy shores, and the option to include the iconic Cramond Island causeway in your shots. It’s a versatile location with plenty of variety, from water views to beach paths along the River Almond.

9. Beecraigs Country Park

Nestled near Linlithgow, Beecraigs Country Park is a stunning location with lush forests, peaceful lochs, and panoramic views. It’s ideal for couples who love the outdoors and want a mix of woodland and open landscapes. The park’s tranquil vibe makes it a perfect spot for creating intimate, natural shots.

10. Somewhere Personal to You

While all these locations are incredible, there’s something special about choosing a place that holds meaning for you as a couple. Maybe it’s where you had your first date, a favourite weekend spot, or even just a place that feels like “yours.” These personal touches always make the photos even more meaningful.

I’ve tried to add as many examples here as I can - some people wanna dress up a bit, other couples keep it super casual, there’s. no right or wrong, I just want it to feel authentic to you!

Tips for Choosing Your Location

  • Think about your style: Do you want urban, natural, or a mix of both? Are you beachy people or do you prefer woodland?

  • Consider the time of year: Some locations work really well in specific seasons, like Lauriston Castle in spring or the Pentland Hills in autumn.

  • Trust your gut: If a place feels right to you, it probably is!

No matter where we go, my goal is to capture your connection in a way that feels true to you. If you’re unsure, we can chat about what you’re envisioning and narrow it down together. Remember, this shoot is all about celebrating your love story, so let’s make it something amazing!
