A winter wedding at Cairns Farm Estate

If you’re dreaming of a relaxed and fun wedding with stunning backdrops and unique personal touches, you’ll love Emma and Bobby’s December wedding at Cairns Farm Estate. Nestled just outside Edinburgh, this breathtaking venue has quickly become one of my favourites to shoot at—and it’s not hard to see why.

A Venue Full of Charm and Memories

Cairns Farm Estate isn’t just any countryside venue; it’s also Bobby’s family farm. The ceremony space, a beautifully transformed sheep shed, was where Emma and Bobby had one of their first dates, helping with newborn lambs. (There’s a funny story about Bobby giving a lamb mouth-to-mouth, but I’ll leave that one for them to share!)

This venue’s character is unmatched, with its stained glass details, incredible natural light, and a variety of picturesque spots both inside and out. As a documentary wedding photographer, I thrive in venues like this that offer flexibility—even when the weather throws a curveball, which let’s face it, when you get married in Scotland in December, is always gonna be a possibility!

Weather-Proofing with Style

December weddings in Scotland can be unpredictable, and Emma and Bobby’s day came with stormy winds and rain. While their plans for a stretch tent drinks reception had to change, Cairns Farm’s spacious indoor areas made sure the party didn’t miss a beat.

After a beautiful ceremony, we dashed outside for a few quick couples’ portraits before the rain set in. When the weather turned, we used the house, the ceremony space, and even the grain store entrance for some cozy shots. It’s all about finding those perfect alternative spaces, and this venue delivers every time.

A Feast and Festive Fun

Dinner by Platter and Pop was a standout. Post-dinner, the couple’s friend led an epic rendition of "The 12 Days of Christmas," with each table taking a turn to sing their part. Even my second shooter, Patrick, who’s not exactly known for his festive spirit, admitted it was brilliant. The energy in the room was infectious, setting the tone for the rest of the evening.

Dancing Into the Night

When it comes to weddings, the dance floor is where the magic happens, and Emma and Bobby’s guests did not disappoint. From wild ceilidh dancing to classic party tunes, every single guest was up and moving. For me as a photographer, it’s a dream to capture such unfiltered joy.

Why Cairns Farm Is a Photographer’s Dream

From its scenic surroundings to its thoughtful design, Cairns Farm Estate is perfect for couples who want a mix of natural beauty and modern comfort. The venue’s versatility is a huge plus for documentary photographers like me. Whether it’s stormy skies or golden-hour sunshine, there’s always a way to create stunning, authentic images that reflect your unique day.
